Why is the location permission asked for?
Short answer
- Will I see no events if I decline location?
- You will. Only the "Near me" section stops working; picking a city from the selector at the top reaches the same events.
- Is my location tracked in the background?
- No. The app asks only for foreground location, so your location is read only while you have the app open. Background location is never requested.
- Where can I see the permission status?
- Under App permissions in the privacy section of Settings, which shows allowed, denied or not set.
The location permission is useful in four places in the app, and all four are things you start yourself:
- Near me. This section on the home screen orders events by actual distance.
- View on map. Places nearby events on a map relative to where you are.
- City selection. For returning to the city you are in instead of picking one from the list.
- Choosing a location for a plan. Opens the map where you are, so you can place the pin without searching.
Only while the app is open
The permission requested is the foreground one. Your location is read only while you are using the app, never while it is closed or waiting in the background. Background location is never requested.
If you decline
The app keeps working fully. You pick the city yourself from the selector at the top and see all of that city’s events. When creating a plan you find the location by searching: typing a venue name or address needs no permission. The only thing that stops working is ordering by distance.
If you change your mind after declining
Once a phone records a permanent refusal, it stops showing the system dialog. In that case the app sends you straight to your phone settings, where you can switch the permission on.
Seeing the status and turning it off
The App permissions section under privacy in Settings shows the status next to location. Turning it off happens in your phone settings and can be done at any time.
